Lookup report line numbers from a flat file

Hi,

We have a COPA multiprovider within SAP BW. WEBI is implemented on top of BEx queries reading from the multiprovider.

There is a new requirement for a report which will be formatted based on combinations of characteristics using the rules below see below

Char. 1                      Char. 2                    Line number on repo

Product 1    AND        Division 1 ------>         1

Product 2     AND       Division 1 ------>         2

Product 1    AND        Division 2 ------>         1

Product 4    AND        Division 7 ------>         1

Product 7    AND        Division 10 ------>        2

Product 8    AND        Division 1 ------>         1

etc.

[About 300 combinations of characteristics and 40 lines]

The report will be sorted and grouped by the line number field, but this does not exist in BW.

I could load a flat file into BW to populate a new "line number" infoobject via a transformation, but this would embed presentation logic in the data model, which is against all best practices. If I had to include line number infoobjects for every report in the BW model, then the model would become a joke.

What I am looking for is a way of looking up the line number in the presentation layer (either WEBI or BEx) so that the line number can be populated outside of the data model, so that the report can be sorted by the line number (consisting of multiple Product/Division combinations).

There are several options which I can think of:

1) Inclusion of new infoobjects in BW for formatting reports (crazy)

2) Universe on top of Spreadsheet in BOBJ folders and merge query in WEBI with existing BEx (not sure how to do this)

3) BEx Restricted Key figures

4) Live Office

5) Crystal reports fixed formatting (not good for drilling down later)

6) WEBI conditions

I would prefer a solution in WEBI, but I am worried about encoding the number of combinations of product/division for each line. Really, I am looking for something similar to a VLookup in WEBI.

Please can you help.

Regards,

Paul
